What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion (灸法, jiǔ fǎ) is one of the oldest healing practices in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dating back over 2,500 years. It involves burning dried mugwort (moxa) near or on specific acupuncture points on the body to stimulate circulation, restore energy flow, and promote natural healing.
Unlike acupuncture, which uses needles, moxibustion uses gentle heat to activate the body's meridian system — the invisible network of energy pathways that TCM practitioners believe governs physical and emotional health.
How Does Moxibustion Work?
Moxa is made from dried Artemisia argyi (mugwort), a herb with deep roots in Chinese medical tradition. When burned, it produces a penetrating warmth that TCM practitioners believe:
- Stimulates the flow of Qi (vital energy) through the meridians
- Expels cold and dampness from the body
- Strengthens the immune system
- Promotes blood circulation
- Restores balance between Yin and Yang
Types of Moxibustion
There are several forms of moxibustion commonly used in Shanghai's top hospitals and TCM clinics:
- Direct Moxibustion: Moxa cone placed directly on the skin (performed by trained practitioners only)
- Indirect Moxibustion: Moxa stick held near the skin — the most common and safest form for home use
- Moxa Box: A wooden or metal box filled with moxa, placed on the abdomen or back for sustained heat therapy — ideal for beginners
- Needle Moxibustion: Moxa attached to an acupuncture needle — performed only by licensed practitioners
Top 5 Benefits of Moxibustion
Research and centuries of clinical practice in China support moxibustion for a wide range of conditions:
- Pain Relief: Effective for chronic back pain, arthritis, and joint stiffness
- Digestive Health: Commonly used for IBS, bloating, and digestive weakness
- Immune Support: Stimulates white blood cell production and strengthens immunity
- Women's Health: Used for menstrual irregularities, fertility support, and breech baby repositioning
- Post-Surgery Recovery: Shanghai doctors often recommend moxibustion as a complementary therapy after major surgery to accelerate healing
Is Moxibustion Safe?
When used correctly, moxibustion is very safe. For home use, moxa sticks and moxa boxes are the recommended options. Always follow these guidelines:
- Never leave burning moxa unattended
- Keep a safe distance from the skin (2–3 cm for moxa sticks)
- Ensure good ventilation — moxa produces smoke
- Avoid use on inflamed, broken, or sensitive skin
- Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or have a serious medical condition
