Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital: Campus Guide & How to Book an Appointment

Overview

Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital (上海市中医医院), affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is one of China's most prestigious Grade 3A specialized hospitals for traditional Chinese medicine. Founded in 1954, it is nationally recognized for its excellence in acupuncture and moxibustion, herbal medicine, TCM dermatology, TCM orthopedics and traumatology, and integrated Chinese and Western medicine. The hospital attracts patients from across China and internationally who seek authentic, high-quality TCM treatment for chronic conditions, pain management, skin diseases, and musculoskeletal disorders.

Campus Location

Shanghai TCM Hospital operates from its main campus:

  • Main Campus — 274 Zhijiang Middle Road, Jing'an District. All major TCM departments are concentrated here, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, TCM dermatology, TCM orthopedics, and the integrated medicine center.

All services are at the main campus. Plan travel and accommodation near Jing'an District accordingly.

Essential Patient Information

  • Real-name registration is mandatory. Bring the patient's original valid ID (national ID card or passport for foreign nationals). Without it, registration and self-service machines cannot be used.
  • Outpatient hours: Morning 08:00–11:30 | Afternoon 13:00–17:00. Select departments operate on weekends.
  • Emergency department: Open 24 hours for acute conditions.
  • First visit preparation: TCM consultations involve pulse diagnosis, tongue examination, and detailed symptom inquiry. Bring a list of all current medications (Western and Chinese), prior diagnoses, lab results, and imaging if relevant to your condition.
  • Herbal medicine patients: Be prepared to fill prescriptions at the hospital pharmacy, which stocks a comprehensive range of raw and processed herbs. Prescription herbal decoctions can typically be prepared on-site or delivered.

Key Rules and Tips

Slot Release Schedule

  • General outpatient slots open at 08:00 daily for the next 7 days.
  • Senior TCM physician slots (名老中医) open 7–14 days in advance and are extremely competitive — these are among the most sought-after appointments in Shanghai's TCM community.

Tips for High-Demand Senior Physicians

  • Complete patient registration setup before the slot release time and log in at exactly 08:00.
  • Check for cancellations during 15:00–17:00 daily — re-released slots can be claimed.
  • Senior TCM physicians (名老中医) often have extremely limited slots. If unavailable, booking a senior associate or department attending physician is a productive first step — they can refer you internally if needed.
  • Prepare a detailed symptom history including onset, duration, aggravating and relieving factors, sleep, appetite, and digestion — all are relevant to TCM diagnosis.

Booking Limits and No-Show Policy

  • One appointment per patient, per department, per day.
  • Cancellations must be made before 17:00 the day prior to the appointment.
  • Repeated no-shows may result in temporary booking restrictions across platforms.

Check-In on the Day

  • Collect your number at a self-service kiosk or service counter on arrival.
  • Sign in at the sign-in machine on your department's floor before your appointment time. Failure to sign in may affect your queue position.

Special Patient Groups

  • Foreign nationals: Book via WeChat public account, phone, or in person using your passport. CMCS interpretation support is strongly recommended — TCM consultations involve nuanced symptom inquiry that requires skilled medical interpretation.
  • First-visit insurance patients: Register at the manual registration window; self-service kiosks may not support all insurance types.

Out-of-City Patients

  • Register for out-of-city medical care with your home city's insurance authority before traveling.
  • Bring your national ID, insurance card, all prior medical records, and a detailed symptom history.
  • Note that TCM treatment often requires multiple sessions — plan for a stay of at least 1–2 weeks if pursuing acupuncture or herbal treatment courses.

Contact and Support

  • Outpatient Hotline: 021-56639828
  • Official Website: www.sh-tcmh.com
  • Online: Leave a message via the WeChat public account for a staff response.
  • On-site: Information desks at the outpatient hall provide appointment guidance and wayfinding.

How CMCS Can Help

TCM consultations are deeply language-dependent — the diagnostic process relies on nuanced symptom description, lifestyle inquiry, and the physician's interpretive questions. For international patients, having a skilled medical interpreter who understands both TCM terminology and the patient's cultural context is essential. China Medical Concierge Shanghai (CMCS) provides end-to-end support: securing appointments with the right TCM physician, preparing your symptom history in Chinese, providing professional on-site interpretation, managing herbal prescription logistics, and coordinating follow-up treatment sessions.
