Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital: Campus Guide & How to Book an Appointment

Overview

Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is a nationally renowned Grade 3A comprehensive hospital founded in 1920 — originally known as Bethel Hospital. Over the past century, it has grown into a major institution integrating medical care, education, research, and preventive medicine.

The hospital is particularly distinguished in oral and maxillofacial surgery, reconstructive and plastic surgery, and orthopedics — disciplines that rank among the best in China and internationally. Daily patient volume is extremely high, making advance appointment booking essential.

Campus Locations

The hospital operates across three main campuses, each with a different departmental focus:

  • South Campus — 639 Zhizaoju Road, Huangpu District. The main campus; home to the fever clinic and most flagship departments.
  • North Campus — 280 Mohe Road, Baoshan District.
  • Pudong Campus — 1908 Gaoke West Road, Pudong New Area.

Department availability varies by campus. Please confirm which campus hosts your required specialty before booking.

Essential Patient Information

  • Real-name registration is strictly enforced. Bring the patient's original valid ID (national ID card, household registration booklet, or passport) on the day of visit. Without it, registration, consultation, and self-service machines cannot be used.
  • Outpatient hours: Morning 08:00–11:30 | Afternoon 13:30–17:00. Clinics operate on weekends.
  • Emergency department: Open 24 hours.
  • Fever clinic: Available at the South Campus only.

Key Rules and Tips

Slot Release Schedule

  • Most channels release slots at 07:30 daily for the next 14 days.
  • Self-service kiosks release additional slots at 00:00 daily for same-building departments.
  • Specialist and VIP clinic slots typically open 14–21 days in advance; general outpatient slots up to 28 days ahead.

Tips for High-Demand Specialists

  • Complete real-name registration and patient profile setup before the slot release time.
  • Log in 5 minutes early on the day slots open.
  • Check for cancellations during 16:00–17:00 daily and on the 1–2 nights before your target date — cancelled slots are re-released.
  • If a specialist is fully booked, consider booking their team's general clinic or a VIP appointment.

Booking Limits and No-Show Policy

  • One appointment per patient, per department, per day. You cannot rebook the same department until the current appointment is completed.
  • A single patient may hold up to 3 appointments across different departments at one time.
  • Cancellations must be made before 17:00 the day prior. A maximum of 5 cancellations per month is allowed.
  • Failing to attend without cancelling counts as a no-show. Three no-shows within six months results in a 6-month booking ban across all channels.
  • Cancellations must be made through the same channel used to book.

Check-In on the Day

  • Collect your number at a self-service kiosk or service counter on the day of your visit.
  • Sign in at the sign-in machine on your department's floor before your appointment. Failure to sign in may affect your queue position.

Clinic Cancellations

If a doctor cancels their clinic, the hospital will notify you by SMS. Ensure your contact number is accurate when booking. You can also check cancellation notices via the WeChat public account under the service menu. You will need to rebook if your appointment is cancelled.

Special Patient Groups

  • Infants without household registration: Book in person at the convenience service center with the birth certificate, or via the public account or phone.
  • Foreign nationals: Book in person, via the public account, or by phone using your passport.
  • First-visit insurance patients and special insurance groups (major illness insurance, cadre healthcare, etc.): Must register at the manual registration window; self-service kiosks are not available for these cases.

Out-of-City Patients

  • Register for out-of-city medical care with your home city's insurance authority before traveling. Once registered, you can settle bills directly at the hospital.
  • Bring your national ID, insurance card, previous medical records, and test reports.
  • Plan your trip 1–2 weeks in advance and book accommodation near the hospital early.

Contact and Support

  • South Campus Outpatient Hotline: 021-23271699
  • North Campus and Pudong Campus Hotline: 021-56691101
  • Hours: Aligned with outpatient clinic hours.
