Shanghai Mental Health Center: Campus Guide & How to Book an Appointment

Overview

Shanghai Mental Health Center (上海市精神卫生中心), affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is China's foremost specialized hospital for mental health and psychiatric care. Founded in 1935, it is a Grade 3A specialized hospital exclusively dedicated to psychiatry, psychology, and addiction medicine. The hospital is nationally recognized for its excellence in depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and addiction treatment. It is the WHO Collaborating Centre for Mental Health in China and serves as the national benchmark for psychiatric research, training, and clinical care.

Campus Locations

Shanghai Mental Health Center operates across two main campuses:

  • Main Campus (Hongqiao) — 600 Wan Ping Nan Road, Xuhui District. The flagship campus housing all major psychiatric departments including mood disorders, anxiety, child psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and the addiction medicine unit.
  • Minhang Campus — Minhang District. Provides inpatient psychiatric services and select outpatient clinics for patients in southwestern Shanghai.

Outpatient specialist clinics are primarily at the Main Campus. Confirm department location before booking.

Essential Patient Information

  • Real-name registration is mandatory. Bring the patient's original valid ID (national ID card or passport for foreign nationals). Without it, registration and self-service machines cannot be used.
  • Outpatient hours: Morning 08:00–11:30 | Afternoon 13:00–17:00. Select departments operate on weekends.
  • Emergency department: Open 24 hours for acute psychiatric emergencies.
  • First visit preparation: Bring a written summary of symptoms, duration, prior diagnoses, all current medications (psychiatric and non-psychiatric), and any prior psychiatric records or psychological assessments. A detailed symptom history significantly improves the quality of the initial consultation.
  • Minors: Patients under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Bring the child's ID or birth certificate and school/behavioral records if available.

Key Rules and Tips

Slot Release Schedule

  • General outpatient slots open at 08:00 daily for the next 7 days.
  • Specialist slots (e.g., senior psychiatrists, child psychiatry) open 7–14 days in advance and are highly competitive.

Tips for High-Demand Specialists

  • Complete patient registration setup before the slot release time and log in at exactly 08:00.
  • Check for cancellations during 15:00–17:00 daily — re-released slots can be claimed.
  • Prepare a written symptom summary in advance — psychiatric consultations are time-limited and a clear, organized history allows the doctor to focus on assessment and treatment planning rather than information gathering.
  • If a senior specialist is fully booked, a junior attending psychiatrist can initiate assessment and refer internally to the appropriate specialist.

Booking Limits and No-Show Policy

  • One appointment per patient, per department, per day.
  • Cancellations must be made before 17:00 the day prior to the appointment.
  • Repeated no-shows may result in temporary booking restrictions across platforms.

Check-In on the Day

  • Collect your number at a self-service kiosk or service counter on arrival.
  • Sign in at the sign-in machine on your department's floor before your appointment time. Failure to sign in may affect your queue position.

Special Patient Groups

  • Foreign nationals: Book via WeChat public account, phone, or in person using your passport. CMCS interpretation support is strongly recommended for psychiatric consultations given the language-sensitive nature of mental health assessment.
  • Minors: Must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Bring the child's ID or birth certificate.
  • First-visit insurance patients: Register at the manual registration window; self-service kiosks may not support all insurance types.

Out-of-City Patients

  • Register for out-of-city medical care with your home city's insurance authority before traveling.
  • Bring your national ID, insurance card, all prior psychiatric records, medication lists, and psychological assessment reports.
  • Plan your trip 1–2 weeks in advance and book accommodation near Xuhui District for the Main Campus.

Contact and Support

  • Outpatient Hotline: 021-34773000
  • Official Website: www.smhc.org.cn
  • Online: Leave a message via the WeChat public account for a staff response.
  • On-site: Information desks at each campus outpatient hall provide appointment guidance and wayfinding.

How CMCS Can Help

Mental health consultations are among the most language-sensitive medical encounters — nuance, context, and precise communication are essential for accurate psychiatric assessment. For international patients seeking care at Shanghai Mental Health Center, having a skilled medical interpreter present is not just helpful but critical. China Medical Concierge Shanghai (CMCS) provides end-to-end support: securing specialist appointments, preparing and translating your psychiatric history, providing professional on-site interpretation throughout every consultation, and coordinating follow-up care and medication management.
