Longhua Hospital Shanghai: Campus Guide & How to Book an Appointment

Overview

Longhua Hospital (龙华医院), affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is one of China's most prestigious Grade 3A specialized hospitals for traditional Chinese medicine and integrative medicine. Founded in 1960, it is built on the site of the historic Longhua Temple and carries a rich heritage of classical TCM practice. The hospital is nationally recognized for its excellence in TCM oncology and cancer support, acupuncture and moxibustion, integrative surgery, TCM orthopedics and traumatology, and TCM internal medicine. Its integrative oncology program — combining chemotherapy or radiotherapy with TCM to reduce side effects and improve quality of life — attracts cancer patients from across China and internationally.

Campus Location

Longhua Hospital operates from its main campus:

  • Main Campus — 725 Wanping South Road, Xuhui District. All major TCM and integrative medicine departments are concentrated here, including oncology, acupuncture, integrative surgery, orthopedics, and internal medicine.

All services are at the main campus. Plan travel and accommodation near Xuhui District accordingly.

Essential Patient Information

  • Real-name registration is mandatory. Bring the patient's original valid ID (national ID card or passport for foreign nationals). Without it, registration and self-service machines cannot be used.
  • Outpatient hours: Morning 08:00–11:30 | Afternoon 13:00–17:00. Select departments operate on weekends.
  • Emergency department: Open 24 hours.
  • TCM oncology patients: Bring all prior oncology records including pathology reports, imaging, chemotherapy or radiotherapy records, and current Western medicine treatment plans. TCM oncology consultations work best when integrated with your existing treatment.
  • Herbal medicine patients: Be prepared to fill prescriptions at the hospital pharmacy. Longhua's pharmacy stocks an extensive range of classical and modern herbal formulas. Decoctions can be prepared on-site or delivered.

Key Rules and Tips

Slot Release Schedule

  • General outpatient slots open at 08:00 daily for the next 7 days.
  • Senior TCM physician slots (名老中医) open 7–14 days in advance and are extremely competitive.

Tips for High-Demand Senior Physicians

  • Complete patient registration setup before the slot release time and log in at exactly 08:00.
  • Check for cancellations during 15:00–17:00 daily — re-released slots can be claimed.
  • For TCM oncology, prepare a complete oncology dossier and a detailed symptom history including fatigue, appetite, sleep, digestion, and treatment side effects — all are central to TCM diagnosis.
  • TCM treatment typically requires multiple sessions. Plan for a stay of at least 1–2 weeks if pursuing a full treatment course.

Booking Limits and No-Show Policy

  • One appointment per patient, per department, per day.
  • Cancellations must be made before 17:00 the day prior to the appointment.
  • Repeated no-shows may result in temporary booking restrictions across platforms.

Check-In on the Day

  • Collect your number at a self-service kiosk or service counter on arrival.
  • Sign in at the sign-in machine on your department's floor before your appointment time. Failure to sign in may affect your queue position.

Special Patient Groups

  • Foreign nationals: Book via WeChat public account, phone, or in person using your passport. CMCS interpretation support is strongly recommended — TCM consultations are highly language-dependent.
  • First-visit insurance patients: Register at the manual registration window; self-service kiosks may not support all insurance types.

Out-of-City Patients

  • Register for out-of-city medical care with your home city's insurance authority before traveling.
  • Bring your national ID, insurance card, all prior medical records, oncology reports if applicable, and a detailed symptom history.
  • Plan for multiple visits — TCM treatment courses typically span 2–4 weeks for meaningful results.

Contact and Support

  • Outpatient Hotline: 021-64385700
  • Official Website: www.longhuahospital.com
  • Online: Leave a message via the WeChat public account for a staff response.
  • On-site: Information desks at the outpatient hall provide appointment guidance and wayfinding.

How CMCS Can Help
